A man refused to sit next to a woman on a plane. When a flight attendant addressed the matter, he slapped her in the face.

On a flight from Turkey to Düsseldorf, a passenger reportedly slapped a flight attendant. The man allegedly refused to sit next to a woman, citing Sharia law. The Düsseldorf police are investigating for assault, the “Bild” newspaper reports.

The incident reportedly occurred on 1 June around 6 am aboard a Turkish Airlines aircraft. Following the landing at Düsseldorf Airport, the federal police attended to file a report of assault.

A police spokesperson told “Bild”: “According to initial witness statements, the man cited Sharia and refused to sit next to a woman.” When the flight attendant spoke to him about it, he reportedly slapped her.

Sharia is Islamic law and a religious guide for Muslims. It regulates both spiritual duties, such as prayer, and daily life through family, commercial, and criminal law. As it is not a rigid code of laws, it is interpreted differently by various schools of jurisprudence—ranging from moral guidelines to strict state law.

The suspect is reportedly a 29-year-old German man from the Ruhr area with a Turkish background. He allegedly confessed to the act to federal police officers. The federal police have since passed the criminal complaint to the Düsseldorf police, who will conduct the further investigation.
