Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) do more than damage health. They can cause disability, disfigurement and stigma, excluding people from education, employment and community life.
On 7 July, at its 62nd session in Geneva, the UN Human Rights Council adopted its first resolution devoted specifically to human rights and NTDs. It formally recognises the close links between NTDs and rights, elevating them beyond the health sector and acknowledging them as issues of dignity, equity, inclusion, and justice including health, water, sanitation, housing, education and work.
The Republic of Malawi led the initiative with Burkina Faso, Kenya, Tanzania, The Gambia and Morocco.

About 1.4 billion people required interventions against NTDs in 2024. Although that number has fallen by 36% since 2010, WHO has warned that cuts in international health assistance threaten recent gains.
