I’ll answer anything honestly.
How would you go about solving the problem in XKCD 356?
They’ve not replied and thus must have been hit by a truck.
RIP OP
I see no problems.
For what it’s worth I think the stuff you guys learn is absolute wizardry. I’m going into my last two semesters of a BS in civil engineering, so I can relate. I do think my studies are easier than electrical but I’ve had a couple semesters where I was just floored by the difficulty, exhausted from the pace, and depressed thinking I’d get kicked from the program or bomb a crucial test.
I believe your other comment is correct, it will be worth it. I can already look at problems in a different way, and I understand things in a way that’s hard to explain in words.
My question: I’m concerned that the plans for green energy have a serious and unaddressed limitation in electrical power transfer. I think mining the needed metals to just build the stuff could further mess up the planet- not to mention the load the grid would have to handle. Do you foresee any changes in the ways we transmit power? Is changing from ac-dc or vice versa a feasible solution?
Lastly, be good to yourself, I extended my degree a semester and took it easy- really helped me. Good luck!
Don’t put yours down. Civil slaps.
Question is way above my pay grade.
But lezz go I think generation and transportation are by and large a solved problem. It’s political forces that mess it up.
Thanks man, I can math pretty hard but you’re the only field that uses imaginary numbers! e^i*pi still trips me out.
For sure there’s lots of political crap holding us back. I heard some crazy statistic about how much grid work would be needed to get us to replace coal and other fossil fuels with electricity.
I’d agree that the generation is handled, just need to build it. Maybe I’ll see you on the job down the road! Keep positive, you got this
My degree was a painful slog, but if you push through it, things do get better on the other side. I’ve got a fulfilling job that makes me happy, and a wife that keeps me from thinking about work more than I should. And those classes that you hate? You’ll likely never need to use them anyway. I’m back at it studying for my PE now. Any idea how to find the characteristic or mantissa?
Can’t help you there. And that’s good to hear. The classes aren’t really painful for me tho. It’s just a lot all at once.
Does the ama help? If so, how?
I imagine it as distracting, which might be enough to cope? But I’m not sure.
It’s distracting I like it.
What made you excited about your major in the first place?
It’s seriously cool when you build a circuit that has a clear function. Need a lock for your door? A processor for a custom chip? The logic of making all of that is the same. It’s magical.
Almost the same reason I became a comp Sci major, back in the day. The magic of being able to just tell a computer to make something was intoxicating. When you have time and energy, what’s a project you’d like to do, just for yourself?
Open source a ready to fab risc v chip.
But thats more than I can chew ATM.
I’d suggest just taking a crack at it.
I’ve never gone as far as ready to fab, but you’d be surprised at how not-too-complicated it is to implement the 40 or so base RISCV instructions.
What music have you been into lately?
Listen to all kind of stuff sincr I was little.
Last thing I heard was Olivia Rodrigo. She can’t even parallel park ? Same.girl. Same.
She has a nice voice. Female singer songwriter isn’t a genre I listen to a ton but I do really enjoy Regina Spektor.
She’s one of my favorites for sure.
What’s your favorite 8-bit computer and why is it the NES?
SNES for retro. FFXIV will always have my heart. Rydia sent me into a lifelong of playing summoners. And it’s been worth it.
SNES is 16 bit but I’ll let it slide lol
I know very little about electronics. If Impedance is analogous to resistance from AC to DC, how does that equate in terms of the common water-electricity analogy?
Impedance is still impedance on DC. I’m not aware of the analogy but the best way to really see it is checking a short video on complex numbers. You don’t need much at all to grasp circuit analysis in the frequency domain.
In the time domain it’s a bit more calcy. But seriously. Watch a short video on complex numbers and frequency domain analysis will be a breeze.
Would the tears and their paths make interesting circuits? Salt water is probably a reasonable conductor, but I’m not sure how to model the eyes.
Prob not. It’s not just about lowering resistance. You need to be able to control the gain and the flow of it to make things interesting

You can build paths with metal that not only transfer electricity. But they do a logical operation. Or perhaps it resonates in a way that emits waves that can be interpreted elsewhere
It’s the basis for logical circuits. Antennas. Control systems etc. And it’s super cool cause the base to build all of that is the same.
What’s your opinion on chemical sentience.
Total and complete guess. But sentience is something that happens when complex enough chemical reactions are allowed to happen for long enough.
Alternatively. I don’t see why it wouldn’t be possible to do it electronically as well.
