Any game that innovates with gameplay/art style is an instant buy for me. Unfortunately I won’t be able to play it immediately as I’m a bit busy but I hope to give it a try soon.
By all respect without hating on it (love the game as it is), there is not much innovation in art style or gameplay here. From what I read in reviews the gameplay is oldschool standard shooter mechanics (which is good news to me!) and the art style is old and known, also used by other games before. What makes this game so special is how well it is executed and brought it into one coherent game.
The fuck!? I thought this was a point and click game, or at best a turn-based combat game. It’s a boomer shooter!?
SOLD!!
Funny thing is, I knew a long time ago it was a boomer shooter. I was miffed that it boiled down “detective work” to gunning down whole rooms of people.
But, on a second look, I’m surprised to see there’s a lot of genuine worldbuilding, exploration, and conversations to go into the mystery! Sure, gunning down hordes is still used as the central play, but I like when it’s not overly reductive.
Great execution of an idea
Sadly it has the same problem as cuphead for me: I really really REALLY hate the old Disney animation style on a visceral level
I saw this and immediately wishlisted it. It’s got quite a timeless quality to it. I’m happy to see this and things like cuphead were so well received.
The style is a huge red flag for me… I don’t think “woah cool rubber hose animation” I think “oh, another hyper-styled game with no actual game”. Negative reviews confirmed this fear.
The reviews are overwhelmingly positive. Out of nearly 2,000 reviews less than 100 are negative at all.
And?
The negative reviews confirmed my fears, it’s a shallow game covered in style.
Get comfortable with people not liking everything you automatically like, that’s how preferences work.
Ahh so you’re just looking for things that confirm your superficial opinion and not look beyond that.
Yes, because apparently you lack any form of ability to think and/or comprehend what you read.
As I’ve said right from the start of my comment chain, I want games that have gameplay, I do not look to style.
I don’t know why you’re having such trouble handling this. Get a grip.
This game has both gameplay and style. The high amounts of positive reviews prove, definitively, that it has both gameplay and style.
What you have done is cherry picking, a logical fallacy.
Now, if you don’t like the style or the kind of first person shooter game this is, well… Those are subjective matters. But you’re not talking in subjective terms; you’re saying there is no, or a lack of, gameplay. And that is simply put objectively wrong.
it’s a shallow game covered in style.
That’s not a preference, and there doesn’t appear to be any evidence that it’s even true. I don’t like or dislike the game, you’ve just made a determination about the game based on literally nothing while all available evidence we do have (the reviews) indicate the opposite.
I read the reviews which confirmed that it’s a stylish game with not a lot of skill or deep mechanics. Learn to read.
I read the reviews too, 95% of which indicate the opposite. Perhaps you should learn to read.
Style > “Realistic Graphics” If you’re judging a game on just graphical style you’re going to think a lot of gems are shit.

This is why you don’t deserve nice things
