I’ve been on this LitRPG kick lately. I’ve listened to dungeon crawler carl, and now I’m on “He Who fights with Monsters” book 4. Where Jason, has been transported back to his original world earth.
Am I the only one who didn’t really see that coming?! at the end of the third book, i realized that something would happen. Coming back to earth actually surprised me.
Also does or did, anyone feel like it shifted the tone or pace of the book?

Otherwise, I’m currently on book 4 right now, towards the end of it. It’s an alright book. I’m enjoying it. At first I didn’t think I’d like the shift after book 3, but so far, its keeping me entertained.
My one complaint, which isn’t that much of a complaint, is that everything seems to go Jason’s way. Nothing is ever… serious? I guess is the word I’m looking for. But its not any different than an action movie/TV show, so its really a none issue.

I didn’t think i would like it either due to the sudden shift, but this faster paced “catch-up” that book 4 seems to be doing has kept me engaged aswell. I also agree with you on the “serious” part
That is more or less my problem with it, I enjoyed it a lot for what it is, but the stakes always feel off.
I listened to the first ten books (so not books 11 and 12) . If I had to do it all over again I would stop about the point you are now.
I really enjoyed the series but like many things that have a dozen sequels , the story drifts and meanders like a lazy river traveling through both good and bad landscapes; and eventually lands you somewhere mild, bland and unrelated to the starting point
Book 3 was a tone shift with returning to the astral space and book 4 shifts back to book 1 where the situations he is dealing with are not far off his rank.

Book 5 and 6 are a real tone shift with Jason basically trying to save Earth while everyone is racing for power they don’t understand but want because power trumps all.
