All religions are an abusive relationship.

“Do what I say, or burn forever in hell.” or the Eastern religion version: “If you don’t do what I say, you’ll never know the wonder, glory, and interconnectedness of hte universe” (double negatives, but same abuse)

That’s abuse. Textbook abuse. That’s what they tell small children, against the wishes of their parents. That’s how religions have always worked.

“Religions are abuse” is a bit more abstract than “this guy used his position of power to sexually harass, maybe even rape women he had authority over”.

Not that I disagree, it’s just I haven’t looked at all religions.

Guarantee you the Catholic Church knew he was a problem and is only acting now because it’d cost too much to protect him further.

Also, I’d be willing to bet this asshole would have been a problem anywhere.

I would argue there is definitely a difference between “do what I say or suffer” and “do what I say and you’ll have a better go of things.” The latter sounds more like advice than abuse.

“do what I say and you’ll have a better go of things.”

The deciding factor is what the answer is to “and what if I don’t?”
