  • that’s basically all of car YouTube

here’s some random recommendations that have popped up on my feed that I enjoyed:

    • Hunter Direction (this is some cinematic good shit)
    • Caylee Harper (only seen a couple videos but it was refreshing to see basic shop stuff again)
    • SteinFab Garage (ok this is just because I have a pos Subaru I don’t want to let go of)

alright I thought there were like three other channels that popped up in the last week that I watched half of their video and then subscribed to so that I could check out the rest, but I didn’t find them when scrolling through my subscriptions. sorry, short list

  • it pisses me off so much. literally every month some new feature/bug is added to critical software that we use and which results in clearly quantifiable wasted time, money, and stress

the ctrl+c issue alone has cost the company a few thousand dollars in the past year from the few cases I can think of off the top of my head. there’s a bit of software that we use where we need to enter the information that exists in one field into another field. obviously copy paste is the way to do this, it’s simple and it should work, right? except the program is built on Access and has its own problems on top of Windows fucking everything up. so what happens is people paste the previous copy into the new field instead of the newly-attemped copy. and that results in people spending hundreds of dollars to order the wrong part. bc the fucking software is garbage to interact with.

  • one of these days I’m going to spend a weekend going from dealership to dealership looking for a new car, and just wasting their time when I come across nonsense features like this

that Prius feature that beeps and distracts you from the road whenever you pull up to an intersection? that’s fucked up

those features that remind you to pay attention to the road because you have sunglasses on, and pull your attention away from the road to tell you that? that’s fucked up

the features that aggressively keep you in your lane when you drift to give room to an obstacle? that’s fucked up

  • yes, I’ll send dates as mm-dd in my personal life as well. only when discussing exact dates for scheduling things, otherwise in conversational messaging it’s mmmm dd

like if we’re talking about when we want to go do x activity, I’ll propose August 8th. but if we’re scheduling trip dates, it’s 08-08 through 09-12

  • ah, but you have to account for the opportunity cost of socialization that you do want.

the event itself now becomes socializing, as you said, which means you don’t have to go socialize on another separate occasion. and because this is a defined task, you can say “well we’re done here” and cut it off.

I’m an introvert, but I still like to spend time with friends in limited amounts. I would much rather somebody help me with a task for an hour or two than go hang around with no defined task for a couple hours. I like having something to do

that’s alright, that’s what drivers with reverse cameras do as well, just stare at it and then act all surprised when I slap their car because they almost backed into me while I was out of view of their camera

I strongly dislike all these driver aids being standard. it seems to just make dumber drivers.

the parking brake was sticking on the car I’m fixing up to put on the road

no problem, I just took apart the parking brake on my other car and removed it because it was seizing up in the cable. surely this car that’s 4 years newer, slightly more economy, and from another non-american brand will be just as easy to do.

so I load up 1Aauto on YouTube as I eat dinner, and about 5 minutes into the video I’m starting to get a weird feeling because the guy is disconnecting the knuckle from the suspension to access the caliper bolt. that seems weird, I think. I pause the video to get something to drink, and I noticed that it’s a one hour long video. (note: typically these videos are about 7 to 12 minutes - 1Aauto is fantastic and concise on all the videos I’ve watched for my other car).

anyways, I’d seen enough, so I stopped watching and went out to the car. but I was only about 15 minutes in. to be fair, at least half of that was dealing with multiple levels of escalation to torch out the brake shoes.
