  • In principle integrated graphics are better. They share the same memory as the CPU, so games can just modify memory in place instead of doing a costly data transfer via pcie, this is one of the major pain points in emulators, games expect to just modify memory, while the emulator has to emulate this behaviour with limited bandwidth.

The problem is that most computer games do not take advantage of this, and instead do pcie transfers even if they could simply not do that. Also PC APIs (DirectX, vulkan, etc) are not build around this ability, while console SDKs are.

Plus, a console GPU is much bigger than usual integrated graphics. To put this into perspective, the major selling point of AMD’s me ai max etc etc CPU is the big integrated GPU… It’s still smaller than a ps5 GPU… It is more powerful because it’s newer, but it’s smaller, and the ps6 will likely have a bigger one.

  • Disclaimer, I played this game in 2019, so my memories might be a bit off.

I think you are being a bit too harsh. You have to remember the scope of the game. It is a small walking simulator game.

The game definitely lets you go a bit off the path. Sure, it’s not the level of exploration and freedom you get from an open world game like far cry, but it’s also not what the game promises.

I really enjoyed the characters and their relationship, I think you missed out by not engaging more with Delilah. The finale as well, I was so frustrated, but it was right (no spoilers for future players).

There is not a ton of content, but it’s literally a game for two evenings, or even a single long session if you have the time. But the content that’s there is fairly fleshed out, I don’t remember half assed features, but I do remember things made awkward on purpose, like using the map and compass, but that’s intentional.

In general walking simulators are not for everyone, personally, I think they should be marketed not as videogames but as interactive stories. They are not really gameplay oriented, they go all in on story and immersion. And they shine when they are short and immersive, which firewatch is.

My other picks in this genre are:

    • “what remains of Edith Finch”
      • Very well made, very variegated, it really delivers in transmitting the characters emotions
    • "Stories untold*
      • The walking simulator with less walking ever. It’s a collection of 4 short stories with an underlying connection. Each one has an entirely different gameplay style, a literal evolution in the story

  • Whoa, these rogue copies of qbittorrent and jellyfin are getting out of control!

Mine escaped sandboxing and fried the HDD enclosure. It might have been the heatwave though. Unfortunately it’s too hot to work on the server box (server shoe box is the new server rack), so I’m out of movies until the end of summer

Washing: I’ll concede that one. But I’m not completely sold.

Door: a lot of newly made vehicles already have automatic doors that unlock when you get close. You can already build an automatic lock if you want to, it’s not even that expensive.

Vacuum: having a big ass humanoid robot walk around with a vacuum is ridiculous when you can just put wheels on the vacuum and let it walk itself around. The humanoid robot can move stuff, it’s true, but you can just put an arm on the robot vacuum.

Toaster: dude, you just complained about the energy efficiency of a washing machine, and now you want to toast bread on a stove? That’s ridiculous, just give it up.

Fan: I’m starting to think you just want the “thrill” of owning a slave

Fridge: Professor Layton is a game about a professor that solves mysteries and puzzles. Try it, it’s fun. 90% of people who played it as a child have shown improved mathematical and logical thinking, and packing skills (it’s not true, I made it up).

Wake on Lan already works. You just don’t know how to configure dnat.

    • Hand washing (dishes or clothes) is inherently extremely inefficient compared to machine washing. It wastes a lot more water and energy. Plus, machines clean better than hands in most cases. I hope you are joking and not actually considering a hand-washing robot to be an improvement over machine washers.
    • The drier replacement is fine.
    • The vacuum replacement is mostly fine, but a regular vacuum with a robot arm to move stuff would be better
    • Why do you want to spend less time with your pet? Feed them yourself
    • Using a robot to open a door is just plain stupid. Why would you ever want to wait for a robot to drop what it’s doing, walk to the door, open it, and go back to its task… When an automatic lock costs next to nothing and is instantaneous
    • Toaster… Would the robot… Like… Heat its hands while holding the bread?
    • Fan… Do you want it flap its hands to make wind?
    • Large fridge… Some people have never played “professor Layton” and it shows
    • Coffee maker… Fine… Whatever…
    • Double entry
    • Double entry
    • The litter box cleaning is also fine

  • Alright, I’m tired of this thread, so let’s get this over with.

I know how an engine works, at least to some degree. I know why you need oil. I was pulling your (plural) legs.

Part 1: The fact is that mechanics do try to make you buy stuff and services you don’t really need. It’s just a fact, they are salespeople, it’s their job to convince you to buy stuff. You don’t get to be upset when people say “those pesky mechanics are always trying to make you spend money”, because that is literally in the job description.

Part 2: Unfortunately, we have built a society where everyone needs a car. So we have to make it so anyone can use a car effectively, not only car enthusiasts. Thinking that only some specially skilled and knowledgeable people should be allowed to drive is elitist bullshit. If as you say “these people should not own a car” but then we have made owning cars mandatory, means we have failed all those people as a society.

“BuT iT’s NoT dAnGeRoUs, It’S oNlY fInAnCiAl”… And? Even having a car insurance is only a financial matter, and yet it’s illegal to drive without it.

No get off your collective high horses.
