Worth noting that using ctrl+shift+esc will not send a cpu interrupt, so it won’t help if stuff is locked up.

Climate@slrpnk.net•Chevron Seeks Huge Tax Break to Build a Power Plant for a Texas Data Center | It would emit more CO2 than the entire nation of Jamaica.71·1 month agoIt does give some perspective. Is this data center so important that we need to emit as much pollution as a country with a population of 3 million people?

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is with the pro-AI posts lately?
4·1 month agoExcept the Internet is actually useful. AI has not shown that it deserves to use that insane amount of energy. It’s actually insane that you think AI isn’t an issue when it’s using 1/3rd as much energy as the ENTIRE INTERNET

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What's the deal with AI datacenters using water for cooling?
111·1 month agoSalt water is a huge pain to work with. The salt would quickly corrode any cooling systems.
If you look at combat between predator/prey it’s nearly always about who can attack while further away. Being able to throw rocks and pointy sticks was I think equally as important as being able to develop co-operative social groups.

PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•Why aren’t there more PC-first gamepads? Valve don’t know, but they "did see an opportunity" for the new Steam ControllerEnglish
11·2 months agoThat doesn’t really look like it’s useful outside of video games though. It just looks like a good controller with slightly more features than normal controllers. The track pads on the steam controller really look like a game changer to me, I use them all the time on the steam deck for games that are awkward to use with joysticks.

Technology@lemmy.world•The Men Who Spend Hours Talking to Porn Bots— “It’s just nice to feel heard.”English
32·2 months agoThe problem with people saying they are useful, is that it is nearly impossible to tell if that is actually true. If someone is mentally unhealthy there are many ways to make them feel better, but not all of those will actually help the underlying issue, they could even make it worse. A lot of people seem to equate happiness and mental health, when it is very possible to be happy and mentally ill at the same time.
This is especially worrisome with AI because it is literally designed to say what it “thinks” it wants you to hear. It has no real training in any of the disciplines a psychologist or therapist needs to be effective. You can’t just apply a cut and paste answer to a patient, you need to understand their personality, their history, and a multitude of other things to be a really effective therapist. The answer to this issue is increasing access to real mental health treatment, not giving snake oil to millions of people.

Ask Science@lemmy.world•Would the tidal forces of the Jovian System affecting Europa mean there might be huge air pockets between a liquid ocean and icy shell?English
31·5 months agoSo as far as I know, and I am no expert to be clear, the whole reason Europa even has a liquid ocean under the ice is because of tidal heating. Where the moon itself is pushed and pulled, heating it up immensely because of the friction of that action. So there would be no “air pockets” as such, because the ice itself is the thing creating the ocean. And due to ice being less dense than water the ocean would actually be exerting pressure on the ice mantle, not the other way around. I think this is one of the driving forces of the cryovolcanism found on Europa.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•If a Space Elevator became a reality, wouldn't the cable act as a kind of wick for all of the unfiltered radiation from outside our atmosphere?
11·5 months agoI think that depends on how big the tether is tbh. It has to be usable as an elevator so it can’t just be a thin cable. And your scenario is assuming that it would be cut down near the base, if it’s damaged anywhere higher up anything below the cut will fall down to earth.

Or rather, “we” aren’t, but palantir is.
