World News@lemmy.world•From 1776 to 2026: Adam Smith's lessons for the global economyEnglish
18·7 days ago“It is not very unreasonable that the rich should contribute to the public expense, not only in proportion to their revenue, but something more than in that proportion,” Smith writes in the 1,000-page-plus tome, which draws on everything from grape-growing to pin factories. “No society can surely be flourishing and happy, of which the far greater part of the members are poor and miserable,” he says in one of his best-known quotes.

5·10 days agoWell I think after this story gets out, people aren’t going to be looking to buy lakefront properties there unless legislation changes. Who wants to be on the hook for 300-500k expense or more for some archaeological dig? This should tank the property values of the entire region.

World News@lemmy.world•China bankrolling Putin’s war to gain advantage over West, MPs toldEnglish
12·1 month agoIt benefits China strategically and economically. Long term military wise, if Russia remains an active land mass threat to Europe, much of Europe and US will build a military for armed land conflict in Europe while leaving their strategic initiatives in the Pacific and Indian ocean underinvested leaving China to grow its power there. In the same way China is using Pakistan and the occasional skirmish in the useless high altitude Himalayas to keep India’s military focused on building a land-based military while leaving Indian ocean and its naval fleets underinvested.

Canada@lemmy.ca•US warns they will send fighter jets into Canadian airspace if F-35 deal doesn’t go through | The Independent
151·2 months agoI know this US ambassador is an a-hole, and he tends to shoot his mouth like Trump. However. After reading the article, it isn’t as bad as the headline implies. Sending their jets isn’t as a threat, but what the ambassador is saying is that more F-35s are needed to fill in whatever security roles it plays in their defensive strategy if Canada buys something else. In the event of some other jets we’re using, they would have to alter NORAD in order to allow more US F-35 jets to patrol the skies over Canada.

World News@lemmy.world•The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Rejects Myanmar Election as Junta Presses OffensivesEnglish
5·2 months agoThe military regime in Myanmar is attempting to legitimize their coup and rule through a sham election process where all the opposition parties had been outlawed and political leaders had been put in jail or killed. It is important that the world condemn their actions and not recognize the regime and its leadership as legitimate rulers of Myanmar.
