It always booted fast enough (well as fast as computers were then). It was pretty fucking useless though. Dos was still way more useful and efficient in those days.
I’m not in America, but they are fairly rare where I live (Canada). Like if I go for a drive in traffic on a commute, I maybe will see one or two at the very most. And it’s usually the same ones that I am seeing when I do see them.
I mean the market for a vehicle that’s >100k, looks like the truck you drew as a child when you were asked to draw a truck, that has almost zero utility and almost certainly has to be awkward as fuck to drive and park due to its width and size, I mean that market is right next to zero. My seven year old is pretty into them though.
Its not even the price, it’s just the principle. If you don’t hold something, you can’t control it. You could have a license expire or come under dispute on a game, and suddenly you can’t play it anymore because some random back county judge issued a ruling. A bit extreme of an example, but what’s often more the case, you buy something on a store, and then the console company cuts the store (Nintendo with DS & 3DS for example).
I’m sure the emulation and piracy/preservation community will see us through all of this, but the less popular stuffs going to get lost to time. It’s always better if you have physical media somewhere with the files you need.
You are going to need 64gb to game comfortably in the future, not very many people build a gaming PC for it to be pretty obsolete 2 years later, and being forced to have to start turning down all your settings. These AAA games get wilder and wilder and more demanding. They are often released in absolutely abysmal states too and it often takes a bit of time to get that cleared up.
Even DDR4 ram is ridiculous right now, 32gb ddr4 plus a tb nvme will probably run you pretty close to a grand. That’s not even a case, motherboard, chip, power supply, a GPU (which may be close to another grand)…
I mean if you want to play Indie games, then sure yeah any old rutabega PC will do it. But if you want it to last 5 or 6 years and be able to play AAA games at respectable levels, then you probably should build it with some muscle.
You want to try and run something like GTA 6 when it comes out on a 1080 with 8gb of ram, I mean you do you.
I don’t pay a subscription on PS5 either. Not everyone online games.
I just happened to be at a computer store the other day, 64gb of ddr5 ram was going to run you about $1200-1600 Canadian dollars. That’s just the ram, and if you are going to be building a PC right now, thats what you are going to want going forward. Even if a PS6 is $1k, it’s still the better buy if this stuff continues, subscriptions and all. Even a lower end gaming PC is going to likely (well)exceed $2k at these prices.
I mean my computer is a few years old now, it was pretty decent spec at the time (5800x3d/128gb Ram DDR4/5070ti). The issue is, when the hottest new game releases on PC, it’s often so poorly optimized that for the next couple of months it chugs, on higher end stuff let alone bottom tier stuff. It’s something that isn’t talked about as much, but PC releases (especially AAA) are more often than not released with poor builds that are fraught with issues that you just don’t seem to get quite as much at the console level.
Not to mention that PC games are all digital now too. It’s all the same issues, problems and behaviours. I don’t like it either, but my point is gaming isn’t perfect in PC land either.
I mean I have both, but you better bring your wallet if you want to PC game. Especially as of late.
Yeah except it’s all fun and games until someone gets hungry and needs to eat. There, the problem begins all over again.
Anything past 60 is just pissing contest stuff. 99% of games are totally playable at 60fps. 120+fps is great and everything, but if it’s going to cost you 2k to get there, I mean you run your own journey but I’d be fine almost all the time at 60fps.
Honestly my 5800x3d/128gb/4070ti ddr4 setup still just absolutely rips. Undervolted some of the cores way back when and it runs cool and just hammers whatever I throw at it. I used to traditionally do 4 year refreshes, but this builds doing time. I’m not even going to look at it until 2029/2030 now. And at these prices, if they are still like this, I’m all for PC gaming and everything but I’ll be in my late 40s then. I just don’t game as much anymore and the console/PC gap is so big right now for price/performance differences that I might just not even.

Three years down the road, I don’t regret it, let’s put it that way. Yeah it’s not really necessary, but I knew this would happen (not the ram price stuff - the sloppy coding and the gaming world’s ever expanding requirements).
I straight up deleted LinkedIn. It’s too much information thats made publically available, it’s a constant pipeline to the black market for compromising info (and it’s already too late), and it’s just literally the most straight up annoying thing I’ve ever used. The people are fake (I mean they are real but they are straight up annoying), the jobs are mostly fake, and it’s a constant stream of scams, recruiters trying to mine your info and mislead you, salespeople peddling their crap constantly.

It’s definitely gotten pretty weird. I’m on my last warning for inciting violence over saying I’m surprised no one has gotten killed yet, in a poorly designed traffic intersection that results in near-daily collisions near my house. Seriously. Someone reported it for inciting violence, the mods on the thread removed it and Reddit warned me and banned my account for a period. I’ve had a few other ones that were pretty random too.
That will maybe happen, but it’ll be at suppressed wages. That’s what happens every economic downturn, if you are at the top, you benefit. Everyone else gets another layer of prosperity chopped off underneath them. You’ll have precarious employment for a couple years and then gladly accept a job you wouldn’t even look at right now.
I’m not convinced. I think there’s a decent enough chance that in a couple of years it’ll be the opposite, we’ll all have supercharged Hemi Cuda’s on our desks. Because there’s been a lot of production that’s all been allocated to the AI market, and when that implodes…
Their free games have been largely pretty ignorable for the past year or two anyways. Most notably at Christmas, where they used to shower AAA titles, this year it was mostly crap. It would be fairly remarkable if they removed games from your library, not sure they’d actually want to move forward with that. It would be the for sure death of an already dying platform.
