  • I’ve noticed it in multiple comments in this thread so I’ll just post a general ramble here.

I’ve noticed that people who “insist” they only get 4 hours of sleep a night are always eager to volunteer it like it’s something they’re proud of and simultaneously play the “god, I’m just miserable, why are you even asking?” Card when you react negatively to the comment that they volunteered.

4 hours of sleep per night is severe sleep deprivation. You will not be able to function at a school or a job after just a few nights of 4 hour sleeps. Some people can, but we’re getting into like <10% of people who would actually be able to keep it together and like <1% who might be able to last more than one week. So it makes sense to doubt claims of people who “only get 4 hours of sleep” or especially people who claim they pull all-nighters on the regular.

Although, to throw a bone, short sleepers are also well-documented as being unable to assess their own capabilities, as a function of lack of sleep, so there’s some explanation for why this behavior is so consistent.

  • I think you’re missing a key point. Archaeology doesn’t look at every single thing from 2,000 years ago. All we have are sparse records of a small fraction of artifacts that happened to be preserved against the odds due to anomalous natural events. Nature could preserve a few long into the future.

Yeah exactly. Voting is 20 minutes out of one day once a year if you’re super active. It doesn’t hinder any other efforts and it doesn’t diminish all the other work you can and should be doing the other 364 days 23 hours and 40 minutes. Maybe you can spend that 40 minutes learning about the candidates to have a more informed vote. It’s just a stinky thing you do to try and put the lesser of two evils in.

  • It’s a complete mott and bailey. Obviously 95% of people can avoid back issues by just working out a few times a week. But when you point that out you apparently just happen to be speaking to the one person who has severe scoliosis and it’s implied that that’s who all of the people complaining about bad backs are dealing with.

It’s an identical situation when you talk to people who complain about sleep or diet issues.

  • Yes. You don’t get it unless they’re related to you. To your point they have a concept that their attitude is reactionary, but if you’re in the right family with sad enough people they’ll hit you with shit like this. Honestly I don’t experience it from my family but I’ve been there when my friend’s dad pisses and moans about the current generation and how he had it harder than us and still worked more etc.
