11·3 months agoI don’t understand what you’re failing to grasp. You see what you’re allowed to see. They are signal boosting shit heads while suppressing everyone else. If your message begins to spread, they will just pull the platform out from under your feet.
How do you propose to win on billionaire-owned social media when they can just kick your legs out at will the moment you stand too tall for their good? Look at all the Reddit protests that amounted to nothing besides getting moderators booted from their subs, they’re a perfect example of this.

11·3 months ago“Social media” is not society; it’s a series of platforms built by billionaires for the purpose of control.

9·3 months agoWay I see it there are two productive paths to take here:
- Start trying to convince women that privacy does in fact matter. Use examples like the menstruation tracking apps potentially being used to identify abortions to illustrate this point.
- Try to relate to the men here on Lemmy and find a way to cooperate. You’ve got a largely fresh population of men here who don’t actually hate women, but have spent years in education being told they are dangerous rapists waiting to happen, or were treated as defective women by their teachers. They need good male role models and women who will treat them with respect, so that they can climb out of the pit without leaving the better parts of themselves behind.
An utterly unproductive use of your time would be trying to fight misogyny on oligarch-owned platforms. You will never win because they find this content useful, as it divides workers and wastes their time and social energy. Just get out, and help others do it too.

2·3 months ago“Stop using social media” is literally the only real solution because oligarchs will never again risk letting us actually connect with each other. You stay on “social” media and you will just be getting run in circles by engagement algorithms and bots.
You cannot save Facebook, Instagram, X, or Reddit because their owners will not allow you to.

Technology@lemmy.world•Controversial startup's plan to 'sell sunlight' using giant mirrors in space would be 'catastrophic' and 'horrifying,' astronomers warnEnglish
6·7 months agoThis is the material analysis we need to be doing. During COVID I saw farmers shredding crops instead of selling them because we lacked the transportation capacity to get food to market. “How the fuck is that even possible?” you ask? We rely too much on individual truckers when we should be using rail… And that’s kind of an analogy for the whole market.
No system in place to ensure there is enough energy, water, food, steel, concrete, lumber, etc. to go around, just this vague hope that “the market will respond to price information as it always does”.
Well now that price information is telling people to invest in space mirrors to send sunlight to their AI-powered saffron gardens, employing cheap foreign workers rather than local labour so that they can sell the spice to wealthy people. So yeah I think that mechanic is busted now and needs a rethink.

2·7 months agoYou’re right, and I’ve learned to ignore most advice I read from enthusiasts. I bought a cast iron pan 20 years ago for $15 and I still use it to cook almost everything, including eggs.
I did splurge and buy a nice dutch oven to make baking bread easier, but it’s not necessary.
Multiple times now I’ve been mocked relentlessly for PC building advice or opinions on software development I had that became commonplace within 3 years, like when I said noSQL databases were overrated as hell but they had their uses. Made enemies on both sides lol… And now that’s the common opinion.

1·9 months agoIf you’re okay with getting behind the wheel of a 2 ton+ vehicle while not actively thinking about your decisions you shouldn’t be getting behind the wheel.
I mean I already said it but again: this won’t change anything merely by virtue of being true. You need to change the system. You can’t fixate on individuals when the problem is as widespread as it is.

1·10 months agothe problem is that people are terrible judges of how fast they can react and terrible judges of risk
You agree there is a systemic problem and then…
Tailgating is a major cause of vehicle accidents, and is purely an individual failing.
… You say it’s an individual one?
People are largely driving with the instincts they learned with training and over time. They’re not actively thinking about the decisions they make most of the time. We can call that a personal failing all we want but that won’t change the result.
This is a systemic problem, so it needs a systemic solution.

2·10 months agoI just personally wish the COVID lifestyle was more accessible.
Same, it suited me quite well and I feel bad saying I missed it because so many others, including some of my own family and friends, suffered. Now that I’m back in the office 5 days a week, I lose >2 hours a day with my kids. I had my own parents say “i don’t get why you’re complaining, we got by before COVID” while refusing to acknowledge it’s different because one of them stayed home with us, while my wife and I must both work to survive.
I grew up in a religious conservative family. These and other experiences drove me to the left in a big way. I see now that thinking we can solve systemic issues with individualism is bullshit. I want a world where my wife or I could stay home (or some communal solution) to raise our family right rather than having a bunch of latchkey kids and being stuck doing chores from the moment we get home until the moment we lie down. Some people say “well that’s how I was raised” but it isn’t right.

4·10 months agoNow that would be a funny headline.
No sadly COVID lockdown isolation did them in. I’ve never seen minds and bodies decay so fast. I have another friend who developed full-blown psychosis from it too, and at this point it looks like he’s never coming back. The lockdowns were harder on some people than we were/are ready to talk about I think.

7·10 months agoWhen my wife’s grandparents had to get a new computer they got upset about the new windows interface and the fact their old games didn’t work, so I set them up with Linux and a DE that resembled XP (it’s what they were familiar with), and I was able to get most of their games going.
They used it without issue until they died.

3·10 months agoBitcoin’s transfer fees alone are huge. It’s over $1 USD now for any transfer, and it will get much worse.

It’s a solid rebuttal, especially when talking about cables (even certified cables are often bullshit), BUT USB-C testers are cheap and you can quickly assess which standards are available for a given cable/port combo.
Still the fact that both USB and HDMI boards thought the current situation was appropriate pisses me off.
