5 days agoLike every other recent bubble, the output is not monolithic and uniform. Like all before it, all the stupid/silly/wasteful use cases will dry up, and something will remain, but nothing like what we see at the apex of the hype cycle.
See the dot-com and crypto bubbles for the most directly applicable examples. Both yielded useful technological advancements still in use today, but those are only a fraction of a speck of a ghost of the use cases being touted at their peak.
The objections of many are not focused on whether or not it is useful, they are about whether or not it is ethical to use.
Many object to the fact that it was trained on the works of others with no renumeration or accreditation. Others have objections to its resource efficiency compared with traditional methods. Still others have concerns about the long-term health of codebases written with it. I’m sure quite a few have all three objections.
These are all concerns that will need to be overcome before this technology will stop being controversial and many refuse to touch it or anything it has touched.
