Hello fellow opensource gaming fanatics on lemmy! I follow this project since close at the beginning and finally made my account :D

I am glad to announce that onFOSS-LAN is going PUBLIC and thought you guys might be interested! But what is it? onFOSS-LAN is a online, FOSS-LAN-Party hosted by myself since 2021. The goal is to get people together, enjoying the art of computer games and having a great time in these days.

So if you are interested to play together with nice people, enjoying our well known opensource games and maybe want to get competitive in tournaments? Then you can call onFOSS a new home!

The upcoming onFOSS-LAN will take place on 17.04.2021 beginning at 11:30am CET and lasts until open-end. The tournaments are starting at 2:00pm CET and registration will take place at the beginning of each tournament. If you want a fix reserved slot, write me in advance ;-)

All info and the full time-plan can be found here: https://onfoss.hribhrib.at/

If you have any questions, write an email to onfoss@hribhrib.at or join our XMPP-channel “xmpp:onfoss@conference.hribhrib.at?join”.

A bit of the same old games though. I understand that there arn’t that many FOSS games with the necessary polish to have multiplayer tounaments, but something newer like Veloren or OpenSpades might be nice to mix it up a bit.

I don’t like Veloren in the sense that it doesn’t run correctly in very low-spec hardware like Intel Celeron J1900.

The thing with OpenSpades is that I don’t know if the server implementation is the Ace of Spades one (which is propietary software) or it is a custom FLOSS one.

AFAIK there is a custom FOSS one.

Veloren might not run on that low end hardware, but it runs surprisingly well on a 2016 intel gpu.

OpenSpades: a tutorial to change master-server (for the server list) in the app (I don’t see that tweak exposed directly) would be interesting additionally to make it fully FLOSS.

Veloren: Intel Celeron N4000 is a 2017-2018 (2017 Q4) processor in which I tested it too and also doesn’t run well. I have also tested it in two computers with Intel Celeron N2XX processors which I must check the year and don’t run Veloren very well.

I have tested with tweaked config too to the bare minimum being viable to play and there are still big performance issues in most scenes but sometimes in certain limited places run pretty well.

Additionally, I tried to compile the source code for x86_32 and finished with errors in the own code (using recommended Rust compiler version, etc).

I have also a question about what is the main development channel as they don’t reply so much in the Matrix channels. AFAIK, one of the rooms in Matrix was linked to Discord and got unlinked during a time because of issues with the bridge. I think this was solved for that room in the end.

Hmm, I guess the intel GPUs in the Celeron line are especially bad then. I was talking about those found in a mobile i3/i5/i7 from 2016. Or maybe a Windows issue? I never game on Windows as driver support is just bad there, compare to Linux (I am not even joking, sadly).

I use Debian and Devuan. I tested in these systems.

Xonotic, Red Eclipse before 2.0, 0 A.D., Warzone 2100, Minetest and other games run pretty well. In Minetest however, you must disable the fancy leaves, plant movement and decrease resolution until 1280x720 at least.

Sadly the main communication channel for Veloren is their Discord guild.

      Thanks for your feedback!

Yeah, I admit that I selected “the classics” for the first public event. We are rotating between some games, Veloren is one of them! You can find our complete list here: List

Veloren is going to be on a upcoming onFOSS anytime. We tested it, however, thought about featuring it as a separate onFOSS without any other tournaments to fully concentrate on looting and leveling!

OpenSpades was not on my radar, I will look into it! Always appreciate new games!

well then it’s not LAN Party if it’s not made by getting together and connecting computers into Local Area Network.

I like the idea of this event, and I might even join, but do consider the changing the name of the event next time it is organised.

Nice to hear that you like the idea and looking forward to see you!

I totally get your point and the whole paradox “online LAN” started as a joke, however, I’ve tried things like “WAN-Party”, but nobody understood what it is. Also “Online multiplayer party” doesn’t differentiate between standard multiplayer and a closed play-together with self-hosted everything. So i think the idea of onFOSS is closer to a LAN-party than everything else!

If you have any idea how to call this event so that most people get what it is about, feel free to post it! I always appreciate feedback!
