the worst insult you can throw at somebody today is “you’re a child”. because in the minds of the US citizen, the child is the worst things in existence. schools exist to quarantine them, to remove them from society, to make them “proper” humans, adults, in other words.
the reason why the child is considered the most despicable object in US mainstream culture is because the child represents nature, the thing that is a direct offspring of biology, instinct, and whatever we consider “uncultured uncivilized being”. in the US, the child is like a piece of dirt, or clay maybe, that has to be sculpted and burned into porcellaine before it’s considered worth anything. even more, the child - through its playful instinct and lust for life - might even represent the animal instinct that has been so successfully repressed in every Grown-up human. and we cannot accept what was never accepted about ourselves.
You ever read a post, and then wonder about the posters life? What led them to think this way? What happened? What are people around them like? What media do they consume?
OP are you ok?

Yeah, but the thing is, this view is not normal in the US. Children are despicable and hated? Maybe on antinatalism communities, but those are far and away the minority.
Tons of people have kids, tons of people want kids. The idea of ‘you’re a child’ being the worst insult is baffling, honestly.

yeah tbf i’ve never set foot in the US; i get this notion from social media, movies, books, etc.
wait let me record a 10 second sequence of a movie.

(the video should have audio, in case it doesn’t play, a download should do it)
anyways the woman says “have you ever considered that you’re wrong? hah, of course not! you’re a child.” upon which the other person freaks out. which i have seen sooo many times in pieces of media (especially from the US)
anyways, meanwhile, children can actually be really reflective and understand a lot, also when they’ve made mistakes or hurt someone. so saying that somebody is a “child” when they can’t reflect on themselves, in my opinion, is inaccurate.
I’m not familiar with that show, but I see what you mean. Usually; when someone says ‘you’re a child’ I find it means they aren’t thinking of a bigger picture, or sometimes that they are being selfish. The panicking the other character does is kind of strange. On the other hand, there are lots of bits of media with the idea that children are wonderful, and whimsical, and have a joy that many have lost as they age.
All this said, media or not, people in the US are probably quite similar to the people you know. Just people who want to live their lives, and for many they dream of having a family, and kids. I don’t think I know anyone who hates children, but I do know many people who have kids, and they are loved.
Calling an adult a child is observing that they’re exhibiting immature behaviors most often seen in children. Your post is a very good example of an immature thought.
An adult being called a child is only an insult because people are supposed to gain some maturity as adults. Do most think a child is bad because they cry when they get told no? No, because that’s part of being a child - they have to learn. If you do that same thing at 20, it’s a different deal. It’s not that children are bad, it’s that you should grow out of some things when you’re older. In fact, sometimes people refer to a person as “child-like” as a compliment, but would use “childish” as an insult. Children are prioritized in the US pretty highly.
I, speaking only for myself, hate children because they’re loud, filthy, and annoying.
only a child would think this way
I think saying that America just hates children is a bit of a stretch there. In fact I think it’s missing the point entirely.
I can’t speak for the whole of America, only myself and the other people I know, but most of us would love to slow down, start a family, have someone to nurture, teach, pass down our own interests and skills to. We can’t.
The economy is in shambles, the people in control are comedically evil. Ffs the majority of the people running the united states are more than likely on the epstein list. Everyone is living paycheck to paycheck, nobody can afford a house to actually properly raise a child in.
Nobody is having children right now because things are so bad here, nobody can afford to have a child, and even if they could, given how bad things are globally, nobody wants to bring a child into this world.
The system is so cruel to children because the people who run the system are profoundly corrupt, do not have the childrens best interests in mind, and want to make sure our next generation is as uninformed and easy to control as possible
Now if you’re asking why most adults don’t hang out with kids, it should be pretty obvious why that is. They’re kids. Adults who are not their caregivers or in their lives have no business hanging out with them. I would be very concerned if my kid asked if his buddy could hang out and that person was q full grown man.
I’m sure there’s people out there who genuinely dislike children, but it’s pretty shortsighted to say “every single person in the country must hate children if these people do”
thanks for the nuanced response, i will take it to heart.
Tired: children are seen as livestock to some
Wired: children are seen as pets or trophies to some
Inspired: CHILDREN ARE NATURE MANIFEST!
An extension to this is so many of us in the US don’t seem to understand that we are still the children we were. You develop new parts of yourself, gain new perspectives, new habits, etc, but the reason you remember the insurance company is the same reason that little kid can hum the whole jingle.
