Massive state subsidized investment in STEM basically. China outputs something like eight times as many STEM graduates as US already, and that number is only going up. Meanwhile, the state subsidizes research and development of stuff like robotics ensuring that this technology is developed regardless of whether it’s profitable or not. China currently leads the world in robot usage with 140,000 in place in 2020. That’s more than Japan, the United States, South Korea, and Germany combined.. And technology growth tends to be self reinforcing. As better robots and instruments are developed, it becomes easier to develop more advanced ones on top of the existing technology.

I am unfamiliar with how Chinese labor market works, I have a rough idea of how things were in Yugoslavia, if those graduates are given opportunity to work (how exploited they are is a different matter) from the start of their carriers and companies need to adhere to a certain systematical introduction to the work… that’s a very good plan. My experience with finding employment after university were quite demoralizing and I’m far from being a rare case with the sob story.

Anyway what I wanted to highlight is that in addition of having a focus on STEM, I’d be even more impressed, if they’re having a vision of how to harness those brains after they finish with their formal education.

That’s the part with the government actively investing into strategic industries. That’s the real magic that allows China to see such rapid technological advancement. Development of technologies such as high speed rail, nuclear power, chip manufacturing, and so on, are being funded by the government with long term commitments.
