The core concept is good, it makes me think of Vine. However it’s a shitty proprietary spyware. so fuck TikTok.

I find the app obnoxious, even when it’s running smooth (unlike on older devices).

Another toxic Instagram-like bait for everyone superficial & with short attention span.

I like it. The content has no substance, but that’s a feature. go there only if you enjoy goofy dances or lipsyncing. If you expect political commentary or educational content you’ll be disappointed.

And your experience will be much better if you follow your IRL friends.

I agree with you, but there is a wealth of valuable educational content on the platform. I’ve learned a lot about animals, ADHD, and gaming history on the app. I don’t visit the side of the app that gets spicy with the politics, so I can’t say how good the political discourse is on the app, but from the little bit that has made it to my FYP it seems decent enough.

If you’re looking for heavy-hitting, well-sourced content, TikTok isn’t the place to go. But if you want quick lil snippets of information, it’s a wonderful resource.

I haven’t used Tiktok ever, but I hear it’s a good destination for fun content. Is there a way to access Tiktok on the desktop, possibly an alternative frontend from the official one? Similar to libreddit for reddit, Bibliogram for Instagram, Whoogle for Google.

I have once made an alternative frontend for tiktok to bypass the indian tiktok ban. but I abandoned it because it was too much work to keep it working when they frequently make changes to the api and website. I don’t think anyone will be willing to maintain such a mess so there won’t be any alt-frontends

The content is really good. It utilize open creative culture. Good political content. Very addictive. Spyware. China controlled.

We should take inspiration from tiktok, because it has some really great features. Duetting, stitching and creating sounds in particular. It is super fun to interact with content creators.

That it makes people anxious. A lot of people that use Tiktok say that they can’t watch a 10 min youtube video because it’s too long and that isn’t normal. This does’t happen only with TikTok but with all social media that gives you constant stimules, Instagram is another one that does this too. And it is spyware btw.

  • It lowers the barrier of entry for many new content creators. And does boost some of the previously suppressed voices.

If you are disciplined and learn to tame their algorithm to your will, you can discover many rich cultures in action that you never knew even existed.

Agreed 100%. The marginalized voices who I previously never or rarely heard has been invaluable. There is so much to learn from marginalized voices who normally don’t have a platform.

That’s not to say TikTok is free from problems. It absolutely does fail to protect marginalized voices from things like harassment campaigns. Both from mass reports and hateful comment spamming.

The creative possibilities of the format interest me to a certain degree, but I’m far too privacy-minded and social media-averse to ever use it. I’d consider using a private and FLOSS clone, but that’s unlikely to happen.

A very much needed opposition to USA Big Tech. TikTok should keep USA at its toes and the morality concerns shown by hypocrites suddenly disappear for USA Big Tech. Most of these staunch moralistic people are also from Western countries, especially Red States in USA, who have a clear conflict of interest.

Also, TikTok collecting more data than USA Big Tech companies is a myth repeatedly debunked by analysts of data collection in apps.

    https://clario.co/blog/which-company-uses-most-data/

    https://www.truepeoplesearch.com/insights/info-tech-companies-collecting-from-you

From my POV, the same goes for Yandex, rivaling Google in terms of search engine results, reverse image search and translation. Western surveillance hydra aka 14 Eyes and their services should be kept at bay. If you do not like competition, you just want singular technological hegemony instead of technological democracy.

Like others said, TikTok is a good counter to the silicon valley tech monopoly. Any country that stands up to the US sees a campaign of information warfare utilizing the western media. So when these countries block or limit access to western media, they are called totalitarian.

But with TikTok, it was seen as a threat that they talked about banning it in the US, which is just hypocritical. Banning RT was also considered. The truth is America is just as “authoritarian” as those other countries. The difference is, America hasn’t had a foreign media that potentially threatens its interests until now.

So I like TikTok as long as I don’t have to use it myself. And I dont like seeing that style of content is popping up on YouTube and Instagram as well now.

I tried it… realized that the format pretty much precludes anything I’m interested in watching and that was it. Clearly I’m not in the target audience.

It’s famous for near-naked woman dancing, so if I use it, people may judge me as something.

But I really don’t see the appeal of the platform. Videos are harder to load, I don’t always have good internet connection. If I want to watch videos, Invidious has been the best place for me. If I seek friendship, places like mastodon or twitter is fitting well for me.

From my understanding it’s spyware. Constantly monitoring and reporting (i’ve heard even after deleting it too, but i can’t confirm)

My main concern is that it seems to be a very convenient outlet for unsavoury characters to reach out to kids
