I definitely feel like it’s the latter.
TBH I wouldn’t be surprised if they sent some diplomats to attend the games, entirely erasing that they boycotted it before, then staged some sort of an accident or something of that nature.
at this point, with how desperate the NATO dogs are for a war with China (or at least escalation of tensions with China), that feels like the kind of cartoony villainous stuff they’d pull. Being able to pull an “oh no, the Chinese attacked our diplomats” would work wonders for getting the general population to support a war in China.
These people are just providing services to athletes. They’re not there in a diplomatic capacity.
